Railway fares to remain unchanged

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Minister of Passenger Transport Management Mahinda Amaraweera says the government is not preparing to increase railway fares.

Speaking to media in Kandy Minister Amaraweera said fares will not be increased under any circumstances adding that they hope to increase facilities for passengers.

The Minister also said the vacancies in the Department of Railways will be filled promptly.

The Minister added the main concern at present is the shortage of staff at the Department, with a 7,000 shortage reported.

Minister Amaraweera also noted that legal action has been taken against several employees related to trade union action, claiming that this too has resulted in the shortage.
