(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – A new irrigation policy will be presented to the Cabinet and Parliament very soon said Irrigation and Water Resource Management Minister Vijith Vijayamuni Zoysa.
He made these comments recently at the Irrigation Department Auditorium.
The new policy will strengthen the Irrigation sector said the Minister. He said at present there is no law to protect the lakes and irrigations systems. Therefore, as a solution to this the new policy will be introduced.
He said that they only have an old Agrarian Service Policy. It cannot protect the lakes and the rivers.
The water which is underground should be protected. We need tube wells which are of quality and they should be managed.
He said that under this Government the irrigation sector has seen a development. “We will develop 1000 lakes as well”, said the Minister.
