Japanese Spider-Man set for “Spider-Verse 2”

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Back at the very start of the year, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was coming off not just some of the year’s best reviews but an A+ Cinemascore and later an Oscar.

That said, the film’s box-office prospects were still not clear at the time and so producer/writer Phil Lord made a promise – if the film crossed $200 million at the domestic box-office, they will include Japanese Spider-Man in the sequel.

The first film didn’t hit that line, coming in just under at $190 million, but Lord is making good on the promise anyway – confirming today on Twitter that the character is already designed for the follow-up which arrives in 2022.

Japanese Spider-Man originates from the 1978 Japanese tokusatsu TV series produced by Toei Company and follows Takuya Yamashiro, a motorcycle racer who discovers a crashed UFO with the last remaining survivor of the planet Spider who gives the young Yamashiro a bracelet that turns him into Spider-Man and allows him to control a large robot.

The new film is expected to include other new variations of Spider-Man. Previously Lord and Miller indicated the first film came very close to including an Australian Spider-Man for a one-off joke but that didn’t eventuate.

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2” is expected to arrive in theaters on April 8th 2022.
